Heartburn Medicine

People suffering from heartburn usually just have one thought on their minds: "How do I get rid of my heartburn pain? What are the medical options that I have?"

In fact, nowadays, sufferers of heartburn have different options to get some relief from heartburn. There are different heartburn medicines available many of them being over the counter drugs.

How do I know which heartburn medicine to take?

In general you should always go and see a doctor when you are suffering from heartburn and ask him about the best heartburn medication for you. Anyway there are some general tips on when to use what kind of medication against acid reflux problems.

First, there are different medicines for treating heartburn and others for preventing it. Therefore you must decide which of this options applies to you.

If you want to prevent heartburn the drugs which are generally referred to as 'H2 blockers' are suitable for you. Most come in forms that people will recognize easily like Zantac, Pepcid, Tums, and Tagamet. These are all H2 blockers and should provide relief from your heartburn. These kind of drugs usually prevent heartburn for a time up to eight hours after taking them. If H2 blockers don't work for you you can also choose over the counter PPIs (proton pump inhibitors).

If you want to treat heartburn problems that you already have, antacids are best for you. There are many different drugs of this kind available in tablet and also in liquid form. Some of the most popular antacids are Tums, Titralac or Mylanta. They usually start to decrease your heartburn pain 15 minutes after you have taken them.

Talk to your doctor

No matter what type of medicine you are taking you should always ask your doctor about it first and read the product labels carefully so that you are aware of possible side effects. If you do take the acid reflux medicine and feel poorly, it is always a good idea to see your doctor as soon as possible. Putting this off may result in a more serious complication than the original heartburn itself.

For more serious heartburn conditions, your physician should always be consulted. The heartburn may be caused as an effect of something else, or might be a precursor to another condition. Either case will not be cured by over the counter medicines, and will only serve to mask any other heartburn symptoms you might be having.

Your physician will know exactly what to look for and if needed will prescribe the right heartburn medicine you need. And if you don't need prescription medicines, then they can always recommend the correct over the counter medicine needed.

For the most part however, people who suffer from mild heartburn can find relief from their pain from the heartburn medicine that is available now. And just like an apple a day keeps the doctor away, so will a little bit of heartburn medicine a day, keep the heartburn at bay.
