Get a doctor’s opinion
Sometimes people let themselves go and don’t start a proper treatment to provide them with acid reflux relief. Are you one of them?
If the answer is yes, you should definitely consult your physician as soon as possible, and find the perfect treatment that will help you. You should also be aware of the fact that if your acid reflux is left untreated for too long, you could be looking at a lifetime of dealing with it.
And although you might believe that you have heartburn, be warned that acid reflux is not actually heartburn, although heartburn can occur if you have acid reflux. The key therefore to finding your perfect method of reflux relief lies in getting information on what treatments are available.
Change your lifestyle
If you are truly searching for relief from acid reflux and specific methods that will cure you then the first thing to do is to take a closer look at your current lifestyle. The fast paced, madcap lifestyle of today may not be conducive to relieving your acid reflux. You should try to keep a food diary for a short time to find out what you are actually eating and drinking each day. This will help you to find out if food is actually the cause for your acid reflux disorder. However, this is only where the journey begins.
After some days, taking a closer look at your eating and drinking habits is advised. Now you can find out which foods you should stay away from, what not to drink, when your acid reflux is most likely to strike, and maybe even the reasons leading up to it. There are numerous advantages of keeping such a diary and it will definitely be beneficial although it might seem as a burden to you at first. Your doctor will appreciate your food diary as well because it will help him to make a better diagnosis of your condiation.
For true GERD relief, there are some general guidelines that you should follow: try to eat small meals at regular intervals. Try to avoid meals that include too much citric acids or fat. Also avoid fried foods, milk products, cheese and tomatoes. Alcohol, coffee and tobacco will also worsen your reflux disorder and should therefore be eliminated if possible or at least reduced.
(a hint for the coffee lover among you: there is a special coffee for heartburn patients available on on the market)
Last resort - Medication
If all these measures fail, you can always resort to dashing madly to the nearest chemist to get some acid reflux medication. Antacids, like Tums, and Zantac, Pepcid, and Mylanta will be a great help for you. PPI’s (short for Proton Pump Inhibitors) are available from your doctor and will also go a long way for your heartburn relief. You should however, be careful if taking any aspirin based, or anti-inflammatory drugs, as these will irritate rather than relieve your acid reflux. They might cause acid drug reflux.
So, now that you’re equipped with the basic working foundation on acid reflux relief, the next thing you’ll have to do is to start and try to fight your acid relfux disorder before it gets out of hand.
