The numbers of heartburn sufferers is growing larger and larger along with the numbers for heartburn related illnesses. You don’t want to be one of them, do you?
If you have a family history of heartburn, if you tend to devour large amounts of caffeine like it’s going out of fashion, if you’re overweight or if you like eating meals that are spicy. If any or all of these descriptions sound just like you, then there’s a good chance that you’re at risk for heartburn. So do something about it!
If you start informing yourself about heartburn and heartburn related illnesses you will find out for yourself that there are different heartburn prevention methods available that will keep you living heartburn free.
Eat smaller meals
One of the most commonly prescribed heartburn prevention method out there is to eat smaller meals. The reason behind that is the fact that eating large meals fills your stomach which in turn increases your heartburn risk because there is a lot of pressure on your stomach. There are also different foods that you should try to avoid if possible. Other measures such as eating regularly and not eating before bedtime or lying down will cause the acid in your stomach to stay at a low level thereby decreasing your risk of suffering from a heartburn attack. You also shouldn’t exercise for 2-3 hours after a meal.
Avoiding Alcohol
Alcohol is one of those beverages that will stimulate heartburn. It should be avoided along with other drinks such as citric juices and tomato juice. Coffee, and caffeine filled products should be avoided at all costs, as should nicotine. Therefore, no smoking either!
Beware of the effects of certain drugs
If taking medications against heartburn, be attentive of taking any with aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. If you do need non-prescription painkillers, then try replacing your aspirin with something like acetaminophen. The reason for that is that those types of medication can cause acid drug reflux. However, you should talk to your doctor first when deciding to take medication of any kind, and you should also be careful if taking different medications at the same time.
Your position can influence heartburn
Some people experience relief from heartburn when they lie on their left side. If you keep your head a bit higher while sleeping this can also decrease the risk of suffering from heartburn. One way of accomplishing that would be to place a few bricks, or blocks of wood underneath the headboard to elevate it slightly. Otherwise try using a wedge-like pillow under your head.
Furthermore you should avoid tight fitting clothing, as this will only put a strain on your stomach, also try and avoid bending as acid reflux is quite common in this situation.
This is just a short list of heartburn prevention methods that are available. If you keep yourself informed about that topic you will find out about others too that might be more suitable in your situation. Heartburn prevention is easy, try it before you too succumb to the painful rigors of heartburn, and live your life heartburn free.
